International, National, and Regional Organizations focusing whole or in part on SAV

International

World Seagrass Association (WSA)

The World Seagrass Association is a global network of scientists and coastal managers committed to research, protection and management of the world’s seagrasses.

Project Seagrass

Project Seagrass is a global facing environmental charity devoted to the conservation of seagrass ecosystems through research, community and action.

Seagrass Watch

Seagrass-Watch Global Seagrass Observing Network (established in 1998) is a not-for-profit organisation that  accurately monitors the status and trends in seagrass condition. The network has conducted over 5700 assessments at 418 sites across 26 countries, involving thousands of dedicated participants.

Seagrass Net

SeagrassNet is an expanding, worldwide research program that investigates and documents the status of seagrass resources and the threats to this important and imperiled marine ecosystem.

Global Seagrass Nursery Network

The Global Seagrass Nursery Network includes seagrass experts from a range of organizations across the globe that meet regularly to share information regarding seagrass propagation and restoration techniques. For more information, contact nurserynetwork@projectseagrass.org

MarineGeo

The Marine Global Earth Observatory (MarineGEO) is a unique network of partners around the world dedicated to tracking the vital signs of coastal marine life, diagnosing the causes of change, and informing science-based solutions to build coastal resilience—all using standardized, coordinated methods. Led by the Smithsonian’s Tennenbaum Marine Observatories Network, MarineGEO coordinates the research of partner observatories and project collaborators that span the globe.

The Sirene Project

The Sirene Project is a platform that highlights and connects female conservationists from all walks of life, to inspire one another, exchange ideas and to be a resource for the next generation of ocean conservationists.

National

Coastal and Estuarine Research Federation (CERF) SAV Mapping/Monitoring Community of Practice (SAV CoP)

The CERF SAV CoP is a forum for sharing information and supporting SAV mapping/monitoring efforts.

A-SAVE

A-SAVE - the Alliance for SAV Enhancement - is a national group aiming to advance the conservation, management, and understanding of SAV/seagrass by leveraging expertise, projects, data, and applied science through partnerships and collaboration to support and enhance decision-making.

National Estuarine Research Reserve

The National Estuarine Research Reserve System is a network of 30 coastal sites designated to protect and study estuarine systems. Established through the Coastal Zone Management Act, the reserves represent a partnership program between NOAA and the coastal states. NOAA provides funding and national guidance, and each site is managed on a daily basis by a lead state agency or university with input from local partners. Learn More.

Regional

Massachusetts Seagrass Group

The Massachusetts Seagrass Working Group (MassSeagrass Group) is a collaboration of conservationists, scientists and managers working on Zostera and Rupia in Massachusetts. The group is made of members from government and non-government organizations, academic institutions, and private practitioners.

Northeast Regional Eelgrass Restoration Collaborative

The Northeast Regional Eelgrass Restoration Collaborative is a collaborative of scientists and managers from government, NGOS, community, and academic organizations with the aim to design an experimental and climate ready regional restoration and management strategy for eelgrass. For more information, contact Phil Colarusso, colarusso.phil@epa.gov .

Gulf of Mexico Seagrass Monitoring Community of Practice

The GoM Seagrass Monitoring CoP facilitates information exchange and maximizes collaboration potential by providing a mechanism for connecting experts and practitioners throughout the Gulf of Mexico.

Atlantic Coast Fish Habitat Partnership

The Atlantic Coast Fish Habitat Partnership is part of the Atlantic States Marine Fisheries Commission. Their aim is to accelerate the conservation, protection, restoration, and enhancement of habitat for native Atlantic coastal, estuarine-dependent, and diadromous fishes through partnerships between federal, tribal, state, local, and other entities.

Albemarle Pamlico National Estuary Partnership

The goal of this project was to establish scientifically defensible chlorophyll a (Chla) and turbidity thresholds that are protective of submerged aquatic vegetation (SAV) for high- and low-salinity zones of the Albemarle-Pamlico Estuarine System (APES)

Atlantic States Marine Fisheries Commission’s Habitat Committee

The commission has recently updated its policy. The primary goal is to preserve, conserve, and restore SAV where possible, in order to achieve a net gain in distribution and abundance along the Atlantic coast and in tidal tributaries, and to prevent any further losses of SAV in individual states.
